NATS 1750 Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Medical Ultrasound, Seismometer, Epicenter
Document Summary
An important part of science is how scientist figure the things we know. In geology (and other sciences like astronomy) a great deal of what we are doing is figuring things out by indirect methods. We can"t directly look at earth"s interior structure, but we can use our understanding of things like waves, gravity and the magnetic field to help us deduce what it has to be like. This material is covered in a couple of different chapters, but interlude d in the text discusses many of these techniques. We can use small variations in gravity to map earth"s interior and to explore for mineral resources. Since gravity is dependent on mass - variations in density will produce very small, but measurable variations in the local gravity field. To understand the structure of earth"s plates and interior scientists have put together a number of different pieces of information.
