How did newton (born 1643) improve our understanding of the universe? using mathematics to describe the universe and nature key discoveries: laws of motion; law of gravity; calculus; optics. Falling bodies always fall at the same rate. Falling bodies same as orbits of planets; in a sense the planets are falling towards the sun just as objects falling towards earth gravity kept earth from being thrown to the interstellar of space. Method used to discover nature of saturn"s rings: Galileo saw saturn"s rings, but didn"t know what they were (1609) Other astronomers made observations, huygans was first to understand that they were rings, realized different views of saturn depend on relative positions, orientations of earth & saturn. Cassini discovered gap" / dark band in rings. Initially thought - solid rings, in late 1800"s, maxwell showed they were made of chunks of rock & ice. How is each of the 3 types of spectra produced? (as studied by kirchhoff)
