How did the planets move and what hold them in their position only acceptable statements are statements that can be tested. What hold the planets wasn"t a mechanism but an invisible force, it"s not a clock mechanism. White light is not pure but a combination of all the colors of a rainbow calculus a quantitative way of understanding everything. Notes: newton- didn"t like philosophy of descartes built upon work of kepler, galileo: use of mathematical relationships to describe nature. Newton took it further built whole mathematical framework and a way of practice used today: hypothesis is verified (or not) by experiment. Before newton: aristotle light was the activator of color; color being part of an object (people thought power is part of an object, mass weight everything is part of the object) Medieval thinkers an object gives color to light e. g. prism stains light. Newton"s experiment- showed color was a fundamental property of light.
