MGMT 1050 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Retrograde And Prograde Motion, Orbital Period, Orbital Speed
Document Summary
Chapter 5 - tycho brahe and johannes kepler. Copernicus just published his work and has died. Heliocentric model taught alongside ptolemy, but only because it worked (can be used to predict observations) Late 1500"s, tycho brahe (danish astronomer) made discoveries of errors in prior models. Nobleman, but dedicated his time to scholarly research. Found errors in the predictions of both the ptolemaic and copernican models. Tycho observed a planetary conjunction (one planet overtakes another in its orbit) of the two slowest planets (jupiter, and saturn) Predicted dates were also incorrect for both (the planetary conjunction occurred one month away from ptolemaic prediction and two days from copernican) No model was perfectly accurate all the time; hoped to find it. Made the most accurate pre-telescopic measurements of planetary coordinates in order determine the true model of planetary motion. Although he didn"t reach his goal, his measurements were an important source of research in the future.
