Stands for union of the soviet socialist republic: this was a collection of 15 republics coming together, people just called it russia though, since that was the biggest republic there. The second largest republic there was the ukraine. America led the biggest boycott ever during this olympics: st this time, jimmy carter was the president and he led this boycott because of human rights. He is going to go after the soviet union, because a year before the olympics, the. Soviet union is going to invade afghanistan: at the time the central government of afghanistan was supported by the u. s. s. r, and when they were being attacked by the taliban, they asked the ussr to help them. This was weird because the people supporting the taliban at the time were actually the usa.
