Flow in the veins = p1-p2/r: p1 is whatever periphery the blood is coming from, and p2 is the right atrium where the blood will end up. This causes a change in thoracic pressure of a couple of mmhg, which have an a ect on your atria and vena cava since they have very thin walls. When you breathe in your thoracic cavity pressure drops, and this allows the atria and vena cava to expand out into that negative pressure space.
