KINE 2490 Lecture Notes - Lecture 12: Heat Illness, Hyperthermia, Hypothermia
Document Summary
Hyperthermia: athletes are exposed to various environments, cold, hot, altitude, internal environments. Hyperthermia: hot environment, to prevent you need to be hydrated because the sweat takes away the water from your body. How to prevent it: recognizing what could happen, what are possible conditions to help prevent as assess. People at risk: athletes with large muscle mass. Increase metabolic activity: more fat tissue which as insulator and retain more heat, overweight athletes, poor fitness, history of heat illness, children, don"t drink enough water, fewer sweat glands. Immature regulatory systems: body mass to surface ratio is smaller, elderly, systems aren"t working as well, sweating system. In order to sweat we need to exercise: sweat and not cool off or sweat and cool off. Hydration: drink more than on a normal daily basis if exercising, prior to sport (pre-hydration) or during the sport (in hydration) Lose 1. 5 l per hour: body will trigger thirst mechanism when dehydrated.
