Urinary/Excretory System
Regulates volume, electrolyte composition, pH & eliminates metabolic wastes
As plasma filters through kidney, it retains valuables & excretes excess or undesirable
products
Kidney regulate volume & osmolarity (solute concentration) of internal fluid
Kidney maintains whole body functions
Kidney adjust for urinary output of H20, salt & electrolyte compensate for sweating,
diarrhea, vomiting & hemorrhage. Urine compensation varies widely. Eliminates toxic
waste products
Kidney produce minimum of 1/2 L= 500ml of waste filled urine
Main Functions of Kidneys
1. Electrolyte regulation- osmolarity (solute concentration)
2. Acid-base balance – pH
3. Blood volume control
4. Blood pressure – water balance & salt
-Regulation independently or w/coordination with organs & endocrine. Hormonal &
neural inputs
Overview of Kidney Functions
1. Maintaining H20 balance
2. Maintain proper osmolarity of bodily fluids through h20 balance
3. Regulate concentration of ECF ions- Na+, Cl-, K+, Ca2+, H+, HCO3-, PO4-, SO4- & Mg2+
4. Maintaining proper plasma volume- important long-term regulation of arterial blood
pressure
5. Maintain acid-base balance (H+/HCO3-)
6. Excreting foreign compounds- drugs, food, pesticides, non-nutritive material
7. Producing erythropoietin- hormone stimulates RBC production
8. Production of Renin
9. Converting vitamin D into active form

Document Summary

Regulates volume, electrolyte composition, ph & eliminates metabolic wastes. As plasma filters through kidney, it retains valuables & excretes excess or undesirable products. Kidney regulate volume & osmolarity (solute concentration) of internal fluid. Kidney adjust for urinary output of h20, salt & electrolyte compensate for sweating, diarrhea, vomiting & hemorrhage. Kidney produce minimum of 1/2 l= 500ml of waste filled urine. Main functions of kidneys: electrolyte regulation- osmolarity (solute concentration, acid-base balance ph, blood volume control, blood pressure water balance & salt. Regulation independently or w/coordination with organs & endocrine. Kidney filter waste from blood & excrete them along with water as urine. Outer surface- renal cortex; inner- renal medulla straited tringles called renal pyramids. Urinary bladder- temporarily stores urine in hallow, distensible, smooth muscle walled sac. Nephrons regulate water & solute by filtering water under pressure & reabsorbing necessaries back into blood while secreting other unneeded molecules.
