Document Summary

Cancer surpassed cardiovascular disease as leading cause of death. Broad group of various diseases involve unregulated cell growth: cells divide and grow uncontrollably, forming malignant tumors, can invade other parts of the body, over 200 different known cancers that afflict humans. Not all tumors are cancerous common types: breast, prostrate, colorectal, lung/bronchus, bladder, lymphoma, skin. Cancer cycle: tumor development cell gets genetic mutation, hyperplasia occurs but cells look normal some cells mutate further, dysplasia: cells reproduce rare mutation altering cell behavior. In situ: abnormal cells but tumor is contained. Invasive cancer spreads into blood metastases (new tumors develop) Stage 0 some cancerous cells but they"re contained: no blood supply to it, can still spread through lymph nodes. Stage 1 starting to get bigger, spread. Stage 2,3,4 spread everywhere: blood supply increases growth rate and can then spread. Elimination of cancer = early detection & treatment + prevention. Family history: 5-10% heredity abnormal genes.
