Problems are classified as a disability, just as physical disabilities have certain defining criteria. Pattern of appearance means that the symptoms must occur regularly and are not from a single isolated event. A positive aspect of having standard criteria for diagnosis is that it creates a common language for clinicians. Mental illness is extremely common with 20 to 33% of canadians having a mental health problem at least once in their life. This translates to over 6 million canadians dealing with some form of mental illness every year. However only 1 in 6 will seek out help treatment and 1 in 8 people will spend some time in a mental health institution or hospital. Most common health problem in teenagers and young adults, and mental health treatment costs more and requires more days of hospitalization than cancer.
