A(n underserved) special advantage, immunity, permission, right, a benefit granted to or enjoyed by an individuals class or race. Such an advantage, immunity, or right held as a prerogative of status or rank, and exercised to the exclusion or detriment of others. Just as men aren"t taught to acknowledge their privilege, whites are not taught to recognize their status. Denial protects/prevents awareness about and entrench that privilege. It shows us that others are not as privileged. Your good fortune is at the expense of others. Allows everyone to recognize daily situations in which privilege is exercised. People can relate to many of those situations. To ignore those signs becomes a conscious decision. Paul marcus: what"s really important for whites to understand is when you"re part of a dominant culture, you don"t realize the things within the culture that are examples of white privilege. White privilege is like an invisible backpack.
