KINE 1000 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Grey Matter, Basic Income
Document Summary
Basic income is a simpler and more streamlined approach to poverty reduction that existing welfare programs -> with basic income, if ones income falls below a certain level, it gets topped to an amount sufficient to meet basic needs. Current belief that we protect the economy rather than the individual (neo liberal thinking)- > and through this we can protect the individual"s health-> research doesn"t support this. Study done -> after gdp, the health of individuals in the country did not change, but income distribution did. Healthier nations do not necessarily spend more on health care, they just distribute better. Incomes are increasing and absolute poverty is decreasing but there is a bigger gap between rich/poor. Increase in poverty rate among elderly (particularly women). Increase in low income areas and increase in high income areas. High inequality raises questions about fairness and social justice -> equity (fairness) vs. equality (sameness)
