How and why we understand femininity the way we do. The federations are frantic about mainlining a visible difference between male and female competitors. The erasure of visible difference between men and women produces cultural anxiety and discomfort. Why: the cultivation of musculature on the female body radically and manifestly challenges out social perceptions of female physicality as fragile, limited and weak, muscular female body disrupts naturalized beliefs around gender binary. Condition of the skin and the skin tone. Ability to present herself with confidence, poise and grace. While there are multiple femininities in the west there is a dominant and privileged. Most dominant, privileged, accepted and celebrated form of femininity. It is normalized which means that deviance is punished. It is constructed and it involves aesthetic labour.
