From renaissance to baroque: religious turmoil & scientific revolution; baroque. Nicolaus copernicus (born in 1473, died in 1543) proposed that planets revolved around the sun. Put forth a theory shaking up people"s beliefs and attitudes quite a bit. He perceived rotation of the planets in a circular motion around the sun. Galileo was born in 1564 and he died in 1642. His most important book was published in 1624. He was aware of a new technology (magnifying lens) being developed which was quite advanced in the netherlands. He was able to use that technology to build a telescope in 1609. Understood that the moon had mountains and craters. Society put galileo under house arrest, instead of embracing his ideas. Inquisition : group of institutions within the government system of the catholic. Suppressed many of the greatest minds and innovators. Johannes kepler (1571-1630) was the first to understand that the rotation of the planets was not circular but elliptical.
