There are a lot of components that make up the genre of sci-fi as we know it now. Example: though we classify jules verne as sci-fi today, at the time it would not have been labeled as such a genre but rather be considered an adventure/voyage fiction story. It is a branch of speculati(cid:448)e fi(cid:272)tio(cid:374); fi(cid:272)tio(cid:374) that spe(cid:272)ulates a(cid:271)out he (cid:862)(cid:449)hat ifs(cid:863) s(cid:272)e(cid:374)a(cid:396)ios. The difference is that sci-fi speculates about the world through science, whereas fantasy speculates about eh world through magic. (interesting fact, horror is a subgenre to fantasy).
