The novel is about a plague that we do not understand: a plague meaning a deathly disease that kills people and spreads, there"s no defense and can strike at any time, some theories of how it spreads. The plague has multiple meanings and the meanings become more explicit: the plague on one hand is a natural disaster, can also represent mortality the general sickness, people fall down the stairs, etc. Caring for others who are sick/ suffering, and how society cares for its own is a questionable thing.
