In the oresteia, the furies play both sides. Can cause disproportion of punishment: don"t know the right amount of punishment. When you take the law into your own hands, it can go too far. Possible for the harm itself to be an illusion: someone may think they"re wrong, but they"re not. Legal response (retribution: used to identify a fault and punish it with procedures and evidence. The propitiator asks for it: good because it makes the criminal feel bad. Has to involve a change of feeling in the person who"s forgiving and the one being forgiven: psychological, emotional change of the heart, can reaffirm connection to humanity. Can"t tell if someone is doing it to be forgiven. Has a moral response independent of rules. Writing a wrong that a group has suffered.
