Lecture 12: The Detective Movie
The Hound of the Baskervilles is significant in the overall history of Sherlock Holmes
because of its influence on the ongoing representation the Holmes character in
subsequent adaptations. It also seen as significant because of how it made
periodization apart of the Sherlock Holmes identity. By periodization, we mean the
deliberate act of situating Sherlock within a specific historical period. In this case, the
victorian era, with all of its specific cultural and aesthetic cues and conventions.
Four fidelity problems associated with the adaptation of a narrative from one
medium to another:
Fidelity is the extent to which an original source is true to its adaptation. Here are the
following problems associated with the adaptation of a narrative from one medium to
another:
(1) The first problem with fidelity is that strict fidelity between two texts may be
impossible. This is because adaptation involves both losses and gains.
(2) The second problem is that specific and unique properties of different media
need to be ignored. One must underman that there is a huge different between
a painting and a play.
