Introduction: books 9 and 10 are told through ashbacks, odysseus" memories, events that happened before we found odysseus with calypso. War with the cicones: he plunders it, kills all the men, and takes all the women as slaves. It"s dangerous, but not in a violent sense. The lawless cyclopes: this is a lawless society, no rules, no assemblies, no one governs, they have no politics. He does not listen to his friends when they say they should sail away and leave. He is still in warrior mode and tells the cyclops his name: the cyclops asks poseidon to have odysseus either never come home or to come late and wretched.
