A group decision perhaps about an issue at work that needs greater understanding. A decision made for you you need to look at a specific problem in context of your job (evaluation research fits in here eg bhs eval)) Experience of something you want to understand better a perceived problem, personal interest. Experiential knowledge (experience, passion) drives most of our interests. How close to a research issue is too close? . Research is not a method for working out your own problems, and if your problem was making you miserable, why dwell in it all day long? . Knowledge of the literature in a specific discipline and filling gaps where no knowledge exists. Knowing and using all relevant databases (eg pubmed and social science databases) Often key articles reference other key work missed in a search. Drawing on similar issues from other disciplines.
