Document Summary

Hist 3850: murder and other crimes lecture 4. Components of the death penalty: there has been opposition to it in america for the past 200 years (judicial murder/ state sanctions murder) Issue is on how death penalties have been carried out (in what manner) What right does the state have to deprive another individual of their life. In 2015 14,500 murders, only 28 executions were carried out. Raises questions about how the death penalty has been determined. Sex: all of these factors determine how the criminal justice system functions in these cases, and what verdict will be carried out. What is the state trying to accomplish when they don"t decide on the death penalty but a lesser sentence. Incapacitation: whether it"s a prison or death sentence, punishment is supposed to keep the rest of society safe from the criminal. When we execute the criminal or serving life in prison, we know that they wont be committing crimes anymore.
