Could build upon a system already in existence. Slavery was not new in global history: can be traced back to antiquity in various forms. War captives: deprived of all legal rights, bought and sold as chattel. Slaves were war captives in western africa when it comes to the sources of the slaves. The slaves were property that was the nature of the slave trade in africa.
