Families with an army background were very proud: the sons of military families were given special privileges in university fraternities. Sdp and the reichstag fears the army: kaiser continuously threatening to shut down the reichstag and he would use the army to achieve that goal. Army is the single strongest unit in the german empire: called a "state within a state" Ethnic germans are nearly the only people in power. Women cannot be elected to the reichstag but they can join in on party politics. Most people join associations to get in on political life: young liberal movement, bavarian peasant league, evangelical league, etc. Organized meetings for various purposes: build a memorial, lobby the reichstag to help their motives. There was an association for nearly anything. Associations change politics: leads to the growth of modern political parties, parties needed to campaign and earn people"s votes, the birth of a political environment where anyone could get elected.
