Christians were placed in the arena at lunch time, and were publicly ridiculed and executed during the afternoon arena games. Ex = the martyrs of lyons (persecutions of 177 ad) The christian blandina was executed during the arena games because of her faith in jesus in the third century ad: The christians refused to sacrifice to the traditional roman gods, and so the romans believed that, because of that, their roman gods had abandoned rome and would no longer protect them during wars. But, christians who were roman citizens were beheaded of being executed/condemned to death by being publicly eaten by wild animals. Murmillo = heavy-armed gladiator with a fish ( murmillo ) on his helmet. Secutor = gladiator that follows or chases opponents. Equites = gladiator that fights on horseback ( equos = horse in latin) The circus games were mainly chariot races.
