In 255 bc, the romans were defeated (they were kicked out by the carthaginians) The carthaginians left the islands of corsica and sardinia, so the romans took over those 2 islands. The romans fought for decades to pacify these 2 islands. The carthaginians asked for peace first, so there was no real winner between rome and carthage. 2 new types of praetors were created during this war. The main objective of this war was to achieve control of sicily. The first governors of the provinces of corsica and sardinia were praetors that only had military responsibilities. They were pro praetors, who initially only had military power, but eventually became administrators of their province (after militarily pacifying the region, and imposed a 5% tax on the people of their province)
