The collapse of the austro-hungarian empire and the german. The austrian emperor goes into exile by the autumn of 1918. Several new or re-established states are formed such as: poland, czechoslovakia, hungary, yugoslavia, lithuania. The german communist party is called the kdp. The two key leaders of the kdp are karl liebknecht and rosa luxemburg. Phillip scheidemann declares germany a republic on november 9, 1918. We owe that to the twelve million murdered victims; we owe that to our children, we owe that to humanity! Socialism alone is in a position to complete the great work of the permanent peace and therefore we call to you: arise for the struggle! There was rebellion in the streets of berlin in january of 1919. Relying on these troops was dangerous, but it would put down the communist rebellion. Both liebknecht and luxemburg were murdered by the freikorps in 1919. Their bodies were discovered in the river spree.
