ENVS 1000 Lecture Notes - Lecture 21: Nonpoint Source Pollution, Sustainable City, Sumer
Document Summary
Green cities are concern of environmental planners and urban designers; help improve our environmental situation and quality of life: green buildings are concern for engineers and architects, green design is concern for artists and citizens. Buildings consume energy, emit carbon dioxide, contribute to solid waste; results in point source and non-point source pollutants. Contributions will grow since more than 50% of worlds populations live in urban centres. Key elements of green buildings and design: use modern design and tech. to enhance builds environmentally (new materials) and rediscover older designs from vernacular (traditional) build structures that were already environmental long before modern era. Earlier buildings were built from local materials and intimately related to climate of the area: took advantage of shade, wind and/or water. Depend on local materials; 1st nations people build their dwellings/teepees from hides and inuit people build igloos from ice. In desserts homes have been built from sundried brick. These homes are respondent of the local environment.
