Liturgical drama is traced to tropes inserted into the easter service; the oldest trope dates back to 925. This is the quem quaeritis ( whom are you seeking? ) whitsun, or pentecost: the seventh sunday after easter; whitsuntide, the week after whitsun when the cycle plays were often performed. Corpus christi: a new feast in 1311, occurring one week after whitsuntide; also a time when the cycle plays were performed. Guilds can be compared to modern day trade unions; they originated during the 11th and 12th centuries as protective organizations against local feudal lords and for merchants when they travelled. Myst re: referring to craft, as in the craft guilds; thus the cycle plays are also referred to as. Mystery play: a form of popular medieval drama, representing scenes from the old or new. Mystery plays are also known as corpus christi plays. Europe from the 13th to the 16th (and later in catholic spain and bavaria).
