Document Summary

Shows a young woman, though she was 60 when it was commissioned. Presumed it was painted based on other paintings of the queen. The queen gets to choose the way she looks on the page. If you don"t paint it the way she wants, you don"t get paid. She wanted to look youthful and glamorous. Picked very carefully the way she wants to look. She has created a self to show you. There is a narrative to this portrait: she is holding a rainbow. There is nobody like the rainbow goddess iris inscribed. Embroidered with english wildflowers: these are flowers particular to her country. There are eyes on her cloak: all eyes are on her, and she has eyes everywhere. Serpent that holds a heart-shaped ruby in its mouth; above that ruby is a celeccestial spear. Serpent symbolizes wisdom, for good or for ill. Ruby symbolizes the heart: wisdom captured the queen"s heart.
