People think that poetry has to do with love. Love is the single most common theme of poetry. Pleasure/pain - a sweet sorrow; successful/requited love and unrequited love. Elevated; uses the word love as little as possible. Eternal; a sort of infinite love (apparently categorically untrue ) Think about the ideological and political issues that come with poetry. 14 lines; iambic pentameter; fixed rhyme scheme. Sets up a proposition which is either confirmed or denied in the sestet. Shakespearean ends with a rhyming couplet abab cdcd efef gg. Three quatrains; linked together as units by the line. Volta may occur at the beginning of line 9; less common in these sonnets. The final rhyming couplet may confirm or deny the proposition. Volta usually comes at the end rhyming couplet. A turn in the argument, where it shifts. Usually easy to spot, since they are indicated by the word but or yet .
