Discretion is vital to an officer"s decision to use force, and discretion has many variables discretion is defined here as flexibility in the range of possible responses in a given situation. Very few studies on discretion related to the use of force studies indicate that if restrictive policies are in place then officers are less likely to use lethal force. As discussed in the course the problem of police violence against black suspects is now recognized as a systemic problem which has give rise to black lives. Officers feel maligned and persecuted for what they feel are thankless efforts to protect an ungrateful and hostile public the gun remains the most problematic element in deadly use of force encounters.
