Religion was dominant in this time period. Ex: in 1692, in new england, salem, young girls started to act differently hallucinate, sometimes barking. Before the 3 women were accused, they were all marginalized in society. They were convicted and executed, but nothing changed. 200 people were accused of witches, but it stopped once the girls starting naming people who were popular. Phrenologists were interested in how abnormal brain development caused people to commit crimes. They didn"t have the technology so they decided if they study the skull they can study the brain and feel if there"s any bumps, etc. The ideas of science, progress and reason became dominant ideas. Believed human problems could now be treated scientifically. He was interested in physical features that distinguish criminals from non criminals. He thought criminals were born not made (they were born biology different) The criminal genes were somehow passed on from lineages to others (it was inherited)
