The focus of this unit is how we analyze historical change when it comes to media and culture. A series of concepts for analyzing media change. Future classes examine what it means for a media form to die", tools for thinking about the present, and tools for thinking about the future of media. Media history: an analysis of media over time. Often works with differing de nitions of media (as technology, as representation, as cultural practise, as industry) Media historiography: re ects on how one writes a history, speci cally what methods are used to study media. History is not just the compilation of events, it is a form of writing about the past (chronicle) Modern media users are the source of large collections of data that document their media activities. Yet, these documents do not present a history as they are simply data, not a representation of this data that attempts to make sense of events.
