As the world wide web became more and more popular, things became a bit more made manual thing about recording all the websites around, and shifts to being more automated: june 1993: wandex, first search engine to use a web robot to crawl for web pages, 1994: the webcrawler, first search engine to crawl the full text of pages, mid 1990s to early 2000s: multiplication of search engines (yahoo, lycos), early 2000s: rise of google and its pagerank algorithm.
