Catalytic Efficiency
- How well does the enzyme do its job?
o Km tells us how well E binds to its S
o Vmax tells us how rapidly E converts the
substrates to products
o As Kcat increases or Km decreases, the
efficiency increases.
- Factors that influences Catalytic efficiency:
o Rate of electronic rearrangements needed to
make product
o How often E collides successfully with S
Diffusion-controlled limit
o Catalytic perfection
▪ Overall rate is diffusion controlled
▪ Catalyzes reaction as rapidly as it
encounters the substrate
