Lipids (fats)
- Highly hydrophobic molecules
o Mostly insoluble in water
- Differ from amino acids and nucleotides
o Lipids cannot form polymers
o They do not have defining functional groups
- Some are amphipathic
- Functions:
o Cellular barrier
o Control of membrane fluidity
Families of Lipids
- Simple esters: esters
- Triesters of glycerol: triacylglycerols and
glycerophospholipids
- Derivatives of sphingosine: Sphingolipids
Sphingomyelins, Glycolpids
