Two types of Receptors
- G-protein coupled receptros (GPCRs)
o Ligand binding causes a conformational change in
the transmembrane protein (1st messenger)
o Allows it to interact with (inactive) G-protein
G = bind GTP/GDp which activates G-
protein
- G protein now activates other protein/enzymes
- These activated enzymes often produce small
molecules (2nd messenger)
o Nucleotides, nucleotide derivatives, portions of
lipids
o This messenger is diffusible messenger
indicates changes in cellular activities
o Now, External signal is converted into an internal
messenger
