- Effects of Action potential in Nerve cells:
o Action potential travels down the axon
o It CANNOT travel back the other way
Myelin Sheath
- Each axon is protected by myelin sheath
o It is several layers of membrane derived from
another cell
o It is coiled around the axon and acts as an
insulator
o It is rich in sphingomyelins (82% lipids)
o Signal propagates about 20X faster along the
axon
Passive Transport
It occurs when ions and molecules move down the
[gradient]
