Document Summary

Type 1 (insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus iddm/juvenile-onset): beta cells. Insulin released after meal, tells cells to build transporters for glucose & to take glucose to store as glycogen/triglycerides. 40 diabetes of pancreas (cid:523)autoimmune(cid:524) are attacked & don"t produce insulin. Don"t produce insulin so require it on daily basis. Pee a lot (lots of sugar in urine so lots of water as well) Tachycardia (cid:523)heart pumps faster when areas of the body isn"t getting. Insulin: helps cells abs glucose via glucose transporters. Cells wont get enough nutrients so you get hungry & gain weight. Choice for management manage to a point with diet but need exogenous insulin. Indications = hyperglycemia, hyperkalemia (high k+), growth hormone, replacement therapy. Se: too much = hyperglycemia: problem bc you produce lots of transporters that pull sugar into periphery but leave very little in blood & not enough for brain.
