Document Summary

Energy is the ability to do work, to move matter. A type of energy is a calorie, 1 calorie= energy needed to raise 1g of water. 2 types of energy: potential energy (chemical energy stored in bonds) and kinetic energy (light, sound, movement of atoms and molecules) Energy changes form within this biological system. Energy is neither created nor destroyed- first law of thermodynamics. Heat energy is lost at each step. Heat energy is distorted and cannot be converted back to useful form of energy. Entropy is the measure of the randomness, or disorder of the universe- high entropy when light bulb is smashed and low entropy when it is intact. When hear energy is lost to the universe it increases entropy in the universe. Metabolism includes all chemical reactions in cells, including those that build new molecules and those that break down existing molecules. Chemical reactions may require energy input or release energy.
