Document Summary

Humans aren"t really that special because we are just one species out of the millions on earth (2. 3 million species!) Our divergence from apes is but one of many evolutionary changes within primates. There are many lineages that diverged within primates. Hominidae shows a monophyly (we are apes) Hominidae split from other primates only 13-18 mya. We are relatively a new taxon amongst mammals. Dna sequencing has tracked similarity with other primates to the base pair location. We already know that there are long stretches of dna that were the same because dna similarity is old news. We knew from karyotyping (comparing bandings on chromosomes) that we had similar dna with chimpanzees. We have a different number of chromosomes; human chromosome 2 is equivalent to chimpanzee chromosome 2q and 2p which means that 2p and. Inversion in human and chimp chromosomes not seen in gorilla and orangutan chromosome. Monkeys are non-monophyletic taxon within primates and does not include ape.
