Document Summary

Share more features=more ancestors = more related. Homologous; something that has been passed on through generations. A trait that goes beyond the ingroup, it is considered an ancestral character. Principles to follow in building trees: maximum parsimony. This is (cid:271)ased o(cid:374) ge(cid:374)eral pri(cid:374)(cid:272)iple i(cid:374) s(cid:272)ie(cid:374)(cid:272)e; o(cid:272)(cid:272)a(cid:373)"s razor. This states that the simplest explanation is most likely correct. The tree that requires less mutations is correct. This uses dna as a source to determine facts. We can look at base pairs to see if they share common traits. Each tree has to be tested separately to determine if it is correct. Depending on the outgroup base, we can determine how many mutations needed by looking at starting bases of ingroups. Basically, try to use the fewest mutations possible. The one with fewer mutations, is said to be most parsimonious and is most likely accepted while the other tree is rejected.
