Document Summary

Hooke looked at the walls of dead cells, which are what cork consists of. Brown noticed the nucleus, a discrete spherical body inside some cells. Cells use chemical molecules or light as energy sources for their activities. The cell is the basic structural and functional unit of all living organisms. Cells arise only from the division of pre-existing cells. Most cells are too small to see with the naked eye. To see cells and the structures within then we use microscopy. Magnification is the ratio of the object as viewed. Doubling the diameter of a cell multiplies its volume by eight, but multiplies its surface area by only four. Some cells increase their ability to exchange materials with their surroundings by flattening or by developing surface folds or extensions that increase their surface area. All cells are bound by the plasma membrane (lipid & protein) The plasma membrane consists of a phospholipid bilayer.
