Melanesian ritual of semen practices amongst boys (separate from women), semen of older bachelors contained masculinity, boys had to ingest masculinity. Elliston had issues with herdt imputing this western ideology of gender and sexuality and homosexual eroticism. Asserting male dominance, control over society, semen creates a society where men are in control. Women were seen as harmful to men, harmful to man"s masculinity, enforced male supremacy. However, using certain substances creates this notion that gender is more fluid. Semen practices transmit teachings to boys which initiates about gender and age hierarchy in. It is a way to communicate messages about social hierarchy, as well as the differences between men and women.
