Missionaries were sent to learn about the local belief system of colonized peoples: many notes and cultural texts came from these missionaries, referred to as proto anthropologists , their primary goal was to convert colonized individuals into christians. Early anthropologists in the 19th century were known as armchair anthropologists: never met with the people they were studying, these anthropologists had biases; they weren"t reading notes from trained anthropologists. Malinowski was one of the first anthropologists who went to polynesia and actually spent long periods of time living with the native people: argued that anthropology cannot be complete at home, encouraged and promoted the ethnographic method. Research methods: e. g. surveys, archives, media and internet, questionnaires, interviews. Prior to fieldwork a research question needs to be established: requires reading and being educated by existing literature on the topic, consulting individuals involved in that particular research.
