The public health agency of canada has confirmed that there are now several human cases of the pandemic strain of influenza in canada. Juan is a pharmacist working in a busy toronto community pharmacy. He is aware that the government can expropriate his supply of the antiviral drug, oseltamivir phosphate, at any moment to supplement the government stockpile. However, juan also has many clients in the community coming to him for a supply of oseltamivir phosphate. Although it is well known that there is a short supply of this drug, some physicians are still writing prescriptions for this drug for patients who are intending to use it for prophylaxis, not treatment. Recently, there have been reports of pharmacists being physically assaulted when they have refused or been unable to fill prescriptions for oseltamivir phosphate. In addition, juan is concerned that by continuing to work, he will be exposed to the virus, and will bring it home to his family.
