Peter bentley discusses the new age of the forestry industry. Giants of the industry other than canfor are now gone, and the biggest issue in the industry is now environmentalism. From types of foresting, to mill practices, and ways of producing their lumber, all elements of the forestry industry have come under fire from environmentalists. Amount of companies in the forestry industry has decreased. All the small industries ceased to exist because of the economic downtown and of the 5 major companies (canfor, weldwood, macmillan bloedel, crown zellerbach and b. c. A reason for the disappearance of many of the industry"s top companies includes the changing world demand for wood species and products, something many companies could not keep up with. Canfor too had to lay off several thousands of workers as well as close it"s panel and fibre division (originally known as pacific veneer; canfor"s original business) Canfor had to move away from coastal foresting due to environmentalist pressure.
