Sex and gender not necessarily the same thing. Sex = biological basis (physical bodies) help distinguish bw men and women: gender = socially determined qualities we associate w boys/girls and women/men masculinity and femininity. Sex and gender are presented as binary concepts one or the other. Socialization of gender, families, education and the media: being female, or male is taught to us through agents of socialization. Families, education and media reproduce gender expectations by modeling and illustrating what is considered correct behavior + redirecting. Plastic surgeons, the cosmetic and dieting industries and other beauty oriented companies make billions of dollars selling products + services: gender influences work. Interested in examining how gender differences have access to and control of scarce resources vs how gender identities are formed. Interested in the meanings of male and female and of masculinity and femininity: gender created through social interactions, children learn gender related behaviours through social institutions via operant conditioning.
