Lesson one: a brief history of theories about grief. The model of mourning that has dominated thinking about grief in the west is the model. Freud presented in his paper "mourning and melancholia" written in 1917. You are not required to read the paper, but if you are interested, here"s a link to a copy of it. Mourning in this essay is portrayed as the process of detaching from the lost object and reinvesting it in a new object. There are, however, problems with this detachment model, some of which freud himself recognized soon after he wrote this essay. Alternative ways of conceptualizing mourning are emerging and will be discussed below. But first i turn to a closer look at the view of mourning presented in this influential paper. The ideas in this paper can be challenging, and he uses some terms that may be new to you.
