Document Summary

Evil lecture 3 sept 20th (evil lecture 4 salem witch trials video) Colonial america was primarily protestant and catholic. English came to this land to find a space where they could grow a pure religion. Protestants protest against the anglicans because they are too ritualistic/magical. Wanted a pure religion with less spiritual beliefs. Group of people who did not want to fight anglican church and separated known as the pilgrims. Uprooted and moved to new lands (in colonial america) to start their own society. Believe firmly that god has given them this land. By dominating the land, one can control satan (european belief). Myth of the wild and unknown wilderness being evil. Europeans hoped indigenous people who could communicate with animals, could do the same with satan. Puritans met one specific tribe called the pequot (descendant tribe of algonquin) who did not receive the christian religion well at all and wanted no part of it.
